I’ve been thinking about this blog post for a long time now. Almost 10 months to be exact. What would I say? What kind of photos would be on here? You hear all the tales about experiencing the birth of your first child and how incredible, life-changing and surreal it all is and how quickly your life transitions from one phase to the next. At 11:10 this morning, Jaxon Michael Montgomery arrived and proved those tales to be true.
Weighing in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces with a length of 19.5 inches, Jaxon made a very quick arrival. How quick? Kristin’s water broke at 8:15am, contractions started about eight minutes apart around 9:00am, we arrived at the hospital at 9:15am, settled into our room around 9:15 and less than two hours later, Jaxon arrived. Kristin pushed for all of five minutes. To me, it felt like five hours. I asked the doctors if five minutes was a normal amount of time because it felt like forever to me. They said normal was more like one to two hours. Women… I salute you. I’ll leave it at that.
So being a photographer and a dad, I captured all kinds of moments on Jax’s first day on Earth. I’d like to think he had something to do with the Badgers’ men’s basketball team’s 63-60 road win over eighth ranked Ohio State. I’d also like ot thank him for waiting for today to arrive and not Saturday when I was shooting a wedding.
This was the most incredible experience of my life. I’m so happy and blessed to have a great family, friends and now a beautiful son. Here are some images from our first day with Jax.

Congratulations, Derek! So wonderful … what an adorable family, even moreso with Jaxon. And how lucky you are to be able to capture this in such stunning, immediate beauty.
